Premier Lin Chuan says that the government’s policy towards Mainland Chinese spouses of Taiwanese nationals has not changed.
Lin was responding Wednesday to reporters’ questions about a stalled amendment that would reduce the number of years Mainland spouses must reside in Taiwan before being eligible for an ID card. The amendment has been shelved in the Legislature over concerns about a possible violation of procedure.
The premier said that the government’s basic principle of protecting Mainland spouses’ interests has not changed. At the same time, however, Lin said the government will respect the decisions of the Legislature on whether to relax rules on ID card requirement for Mainland spouses.
