The head of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission (MTAC), says the organization should be merged with other government agencies.
The Cabinet-level commission was originally established in 1928 in Nanking, China after restructuring by the Republic of China government. The Republic of China is Taiwan’s official name.
The commission’s mission, however, has changed dramatically over the past few decades as Tibet and Mongolia are no longer administered by the government in Taiwan. Today the commission is mainly tasked with promoting cultural exchanges with Tibetans and Mongolians around the world.
The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has long upheld the removal of the commission. With the DPP’s return to power in mid-May, the commission’s future has become a topic of discussion again.
Minister Lin Mei-chu told lawmakers on Monday that the ruling and opposition camps have similar views on the issue, so merging with other government agencies is a possibility.
