Taiwan has 24 universities on the latest Times Higher Education list of Asia’s top 200 universities. Ten of Taiwan’s universities made the top 100. First among them was National Taiwan University in 15th.

The list was topped by National University of Singapore, followed by Nanyang Technological University, also in Singapore. The schools were ranked according to 13 categories covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

Times Higher Education editor Phil Baty said that Taiwan placed second in number of universities on the list though it does not have a school in the top ten. The top 10 schools were in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. In 2013, Taiwan had 17 universities in the top 100 but this year it only had 10. Baty said Taiwan should improve its international outlook and promote more influential research.

The universities that made the top 100 were National Taiwan University at 15, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology at 28, National Chiao Tung University at 31, National Tsing Hua University at 35, National Cheng Kung University at 41, China Medical University, Taiwan at 46, National Taiwan Normal University at 68, National Yang-ming University at 70, National Sun Yat-sen University at 73 and National Central University at 94.
