On this day in 1944, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly known as the G.I. Bill.

On this day in 1986, the controversial Hand of God goal by Diego Maradona occurred in the quarter-finals of the 1986 FIFA World Cup match between Argentina and England. This was later followed by the Goal of the Century also by Maradona. Argentina won 2–1 and went on to win the world cup.

On this day in 2007, an F5 tornado struck Elie, Manitoba in Canada; part of the town was destroyed, but there were no fatalities or injuries.

On this day in 2012, Turkish Air Force McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter plane was shot down by the Syrian Armed Forces, killing both of the plane's pilots and worsening already-strained relations between Turkey and Syria.
