The average age of first-time mothers in Taiwan is now at 30.6. That was the word from the interior ministry on Wednesday. Taipei has the highest average age for first-time mothers at 32.4. Hsinchu followed at 31.2 and New Taipei City at 31.1 years of age. Demographics are a topic of strong public interest in Taiwan, where the birthrate remains among the lowest in the world and the elderly population is rapidly growing.
Only 10% of children born last year were the third child in their family. The interior ministry said that during the 1960s, the number of third children born in any given year was close to 33%. In the 1980s, that number was still at around 20%.
The government said it will continue to work on measures to encourage people to have children.
