The Cabinet will respect the judgment of health ministry experts charged with examining how Japan is screening food products for radiation. That’s according to Premier Lin Chuan, who said Wednesday that the Cabinet respects their expertise.
Taiwan banned imports of food produced in Fukushima and surrounding prefectures after the Fukushima nuclear disaster of 2011. The government has yet to lift the ban amid concerns about radiation.
However, Taiwan’s new representative to Japan, Frank Hsieh, says that the health ministry will send experts to evaluate how Japan is performing food safety inspections. Hsieh says that the government will reach a decision of whether to lift the ban at the end of the year.
However, Premier Lin Chuan said Wednesday that any decision on whether to lift the ban will be made in accordance with proper procedures. Lin also said that there is no timetable in place for lifting the ban.
