U.S. Senate passes resolution on TRA and Six Assurances

The US Senate has passed a concurrent resolution which reaffirms the Taiwan Relations Act (TRA) and the Six Assurances as the cornerstone of the US-Taiwan relationship.

Taiwan’s government first proposed the Six Assurances in 1982 as guidelines for the informal relationship between the two countries. The Six Assurances state that the US will sell Taiwan defensive weapons while not intervening in matters regarding Taiwan’s sovereignty or its relationship with China.

Much like the House of Representatives’ passing of a similar resolution in May, the Senate’s resolution reflects the US support for Taiwan in the international community.
