Tsai makes stopover in Miami on first leg of overseas trip
Tsai Ing-wen visits Miami

President Tsai Ing-wen was in Miami on Friday for a brief stopover as part of her first overseas trip as president.

During her stopover in the US, Tsai met with notables including US Senator Marco Rubio, and Taiwanese baseball pitcher Chen Wei-yin, who currently plays for the Miami Marlins. She also visited the Port of Miami and attended a dinner held for overseas Taiwanese.

Tsai began her address to attendees of the dinner by condemning the recent terror attack in Orlando, offering her condolences to the victims’ families and denouncing violence. During her address, Tsai spoke about the importance of the unofficial US-Taiwan relationship as well as the ties between Taiwan and the State of Florida.

Tsai also told attendees that the efforts of individual Taiwanese like Marlins pitcher Chen Wei-yin play an important role in raising Taiwan’s international profile.

Tsai’s next stop is Panama, where she will attend a ceremony marking the completion of a project to expend the Panama Canal. She will travel to Paraguay from June 27 to June 30 and return from her nine-day trip on July 2.
