China Airlines makes concessions to union members

China Airlines (CAL) Chairman Ho Nuan-hsuan made concessions to all requests made by the China Airlines Employee Union during a second attempt on Tuesday to resolve a threat of further strike action. The union has also called off its original plan to strike on Friday.

CAL flight attendants went on strike last week, forcing the cancellation of more than 120 flights. Following Ho’s concessions, members of the union, which covers ground staff, pilots, maintenance workers and other CAL employees, tried to seek similar benefits to those won by the flight attendants. The union’s first meeting with the management on Monday failed to produce an agreement.

When the issue was brought up at the Legislature on Tuesday, Premier Lin Chuan called for the CAL management to empathize with its employees. He called on both state-run and private companies to treat their staff as working partners.
