Economics minister to meet with Taipower union

Economics Minister Lee Chih-kung says he will meet representatives of the union for employees of state-owned power company Taipower.

The meeting is scheduled to take place Thursday as Taipower workers threaten a strike. Workers are upset about an amendment to the Electricity Act which they the government has failed to explain, and which they say will be pushed through soon without a public hearing.

Taipower workers say that if the economics ministry forces the amendment through, they will stage a protest, surround the ministry building with 30,000 workers. Taipower workers have also said that they may even begin refusing to repair lines downed in typhoons if the amendment is pushed ahead.

While the economics minister will meet with union representatives Thursday, he said that his ministry needs to finish simulations before it can explain the amendment to workers.
