The head of the Mainland Affairs Council, Katharine Chang, has said her agency will seek to resolve the current impasse in cross-strait communication with “sincerity and patience.”
The Mainland Affairs Council is Taiwan’s top government agency charting China policy. Its Chinese counterpart, the Taiwan Affairs Office, has announced an official suspension of cross-strait dialogue. The move by Beijing is seen as a boycott of the new Tsai Ing-wen administration. The administration has declined to acknowledge the 1992 Consensus on “one China with separate interpretations.” There has been no contact between the two cross-strait agencies since Tsai took office on May 20.
Speaking at the Legislature on Thursday, Chang said her agency would continue to seek dialogue with the Chinese side.
"The president has already said that communication can take many forms, and we are not ruling out any of them. We will continue to use sincerity and patience as we work [to resolve the situation]," Chang said.
Meanwhile, a senior official from the Ministry of Justice said judicial and public security cooperation between Taiwan and China has not been affected and is continuing as before.
