President Tsai Ing-wen has demanded a speedy investigation into the accidental firing of a naval missile that killed a fisherman and injured three others. She has also said there must be a thorough review.

Presidential Office Spokesman Alex Huang said the National Security Council has already briefed the president on how the missile was accidentally fired on Friday morning during a naval exercise. The president is in Los Angeles on a stopover before returning to Taiwan on Saturday.

Also on Friday, Premier Lin Chuan said the defense ministry and the National Security Bureau have been tasked with handling the incident.

The accidental firing of the missile resulted in the death of the captain of a fishing boat operating close to where the missile landed.

The premier offered condolences to the man’s family. He said the other three fishermen on the boat were slightly injured, including two migrant workers.
