The Central Weather Bureau is calling for sunny weather in the morning followed by storms in the afternoon over the weekend.
On Saturday, the bureau predicted that temperatures around the island will remain between 33 and 36C, with convection bringing rain to the west coast, the northeast, and mountainous areas during the afternoon.
The bureau issued heavy rain warnings for large areas of northern and central Taiwan on Saturday. Areas affected include Taipei, the northern cities of Taoyuan and Hsinchu, and the central city of Taichung. Forecasters also say that the far south and the Penghu Islands off the west coast may see sporadic showers and thunderstorms throughout the day Saturday as moist air comes in from the south.
The bureau says that a change in wind direction beginning on Tuesday will raise the likelihood of thunderstorms in central and southern parts of Taiwan.
