Premier orders investigation into accidental missile launch
Premier Lin Chuan

Premier Lin Chuan has ordered the Taiwan High Prosecutor’s Office to launch an investigation into the navy’s accidental launch of a missile. The accident in the Taiwan Strait on Friday killed one fisherman, injured three others, and led to a call from Beijing for an explanation.

On Saturday, Premier Lin Chuan called a meeting with officials from the defense ministry, the foreign ministry, and the Mainland Affairs Council. Representatives from the missile’s manufacturer, the National Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology were also present.

In addition to ordering an investigation into the incident, Lin also said that the Taiwan High Prosecutor’s Office should investigate a Facebook post about the incident by KMT Central Policy Committee head Alex Tsai. Tsai posted details of the accidental missile launch less than an hour after it happened. The premier said that the post poses a serious threat to national security.

During the meeting, the premier also told the defense ministry to determine responsibility for the incident, give timely explanations to the public’s questions, clear up misunderstandings, and secure compensation for the victims’ families.
