Foreign Minister David Lee is scheduled to visit Africa and Latin America to stabilize ties with Taiwan’s allies.

Right now there are just 22 countries which hold diplomatic ties with Taiwan, that’s due to opposition from China, which sees Taiwan as part of its territory.

Lee told lawmakers on Monday that there is a “crisis” because not all of the relationships with those 22 allies are “completely stable.”

He described Taiwan’s ties with Central and South American countries as “mostly stable.” But a foreign ministry official said Taiwan has to monitor relations with the African nation of Sao Tome and Principe, which is scheduled to hold presidential elections in mid-July.

The foreign minister has decided to visit Nicaragua at the end of August and is planning to visit Africa in late September.
