Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je has decided that the 2017 Universiade will be held at the Taipei Stadium.
The world student games were originally to be held at the yet to be completed Taipei Dome. The sports complex is 80 percent complete, but the mayor suspended construction in May 2015 due to critical flaws and public safety concerns.
Ko said the Taipei Dome would not be completed in time for the Universiade and said the Taipei Stadium will be the main venue for the games. He said according to past experience it is safer to use venues that have previously been used.
The mayor said the stadium can seat 20,000 and that big screens will be set up throughout Taipei to show live broadcasts of the games. He said it is essential for the city’s reputation for the games to be a success.
With student athletes from all over the world coming for the games, Ko said he will consult with former National Security Bureau director Tsai Der-sheng on the question of possible terror threats.
