The defense ministry says that Taiwan’s flag will not be placed on the coffin of a fisherman killed after the navy accidentally fired a missile last week.
The Hsiung Feng III supersonic missile was fired on July 1 from the southern Tsoying naval base, where the navy was conducting a training exercise.
According to an official from the interior ministry, the navy’s negligence was responsible for the fisherman’s death. However, the official said that this does not entitle to fisherman’s family to drape his coffin with Taiwan’s flag, an honor reserved for servicemen who die during their service to the country.
