Premier Lin Chuan has said prosecutors have ruled out a terror attack as the cause of the explosion on the train in Taipei. Lin was responding to questions at the Central Emergency Operation Center on Friday.
A blast took place on the train as it passed the Songshan station in Taipei late Thursday evening. Twenty-five passengers suffered burns of varying degrees from the resulting fire but there have been no fatalities. Seven remain in intensive care.
The blast appears to have been caused by a homemade bomb placed deliberately in a carriage. But Lin said the National Police Agency had ruled out the possibility of a planned terror attack. He said the prosecutors are following up leads on possible suspects.
“I would especially like to call on the public not to panic, because this was not a terror attack, neither was it related to organized crime. It was the act of an individual. We still need to pay close attention [to the incident], however, due to the severe damage it has caused," said Lin.
