Taipei train explosion leaves 25 injured

A fire resulting from an explosion on a train in Taipei has left 25 people severely or slightly injured. The incident is believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device placed deliberately in a carriage.

The blast took place around 10:00 pm Thursday as the train was traveling from Taipei Main Station to Songshan Station.

Police said a DNA test has indicated that a man surnamed Lin who was badly injured in the blast may be the bomber. However, since he remains in intensive care, there is no way to establish a motive at present.

On Friday morning, Railway Police Bureau officer Wang Bao-chang said the police found a broken steel tube with explosive material inside at the scene, which is about one kilometer from Songshan Station.

“Because the home-made bomb is not equipped with a fuse or a detonator found in other explosives, it is considered a shoddily made device in our preliminary report," said Wang.

Police have already taken eyewitness accounts from 16 people, including those who were injured.
