Suspect in train blast may be fit for questioning soon
The aftermath of the blast

A man suspected of setting off an explosion on a Taipei commuter train earlier this week may soon be fit for questioning. That’s the word from the hospital treating the suspect on Saturday.

The 55-year-old suspect, named as Lin Ying-chang, sustained serious injuries to his lungs in the blast. The hospital treating Lin said that while he has regained consciousness, he is still intubated and unable to respond to questioning. However, the hospital also said that Lin may be ready to undergo questioning in two to three days.

On Thursday evening, an explosion inside a commuter train at Taipei’s Songshan Station injured 25 people, including the suspect. Investigators found what may have been an explosive device in one of the train’s carriages. Fingerprints, DNA evidence, and surveillance camera footage point to Lin as a suspect. Though no motive has been suggested, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reports that Lin has a history of mental illness and financial troubles.
