Muslims in Taipei celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan
Muslims mark Eid al-Fitr

Tens of thousands of Muslims gathered at the Taipei Main Station on Sunday to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan.

Organizers say that around 20,000 people celebrated the festival in the lobby of the station, where many Southeast Asian workers in northern Taiwan gather during their time off.

Station authorities roped off a special area for the participants to gather. They also beefed up security following last week’s bomb blast on board a commuter train at Songshan Station, which injured 25 people.

The event began with a prayer session in the morning; celebrations including live music in the afternoon were expected to draw a crowd closer to 50,000 people.

Meanwhile, the Taipei City government also held a one-day event at Expo Park for Indonesians and other Muslims to celebrate Eid al-Fitr. A marketplace selling Halal food was set up at the venue, while foreign workers were offered free phone calls to relatives back home.
