Former prosecutor and High Court judge Hsieh Wen-ting has been appointed president of the Judicial Yuan. The Judicial Yuan, one of the five branches of the government, is Taiwan’s highest judicial body.
Hsieh is currently the chief commissioner of the Public Function Disciplinary Sanction Commission.
Hsieh has had a remarkable career, his performance gaining recognition from all sides. A Presidential Office spokesman said that President Tsai Ing-wen is hoping to rely on Hsieh’s rich experience to push for judicial reforms.
Hsieh would replace outgoing Judicial Yuan President Rai Hau-min, although his appointment still needs approval from the legislature.
Meanwhile, President Tsai has nominated Lin Jin-fang to be the Judicial Yuan’s vice president. Lin, who has also had a distinguished career in the judiciary, would become the first woman to take on the post.
