The Presidential Office has reiterated the nation’s sovereignty over its outlying islands in the South China Sea. That’s ahead of an international court decision to be handed down on Tuesday regarding the Philippines’ challenge to Chinese sovereignty in the region.
The Presidential Office reiterated three principals for dealing with disputes in the South China Sea. The first is that all parties must abide by international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. The second is that all parties must use peaceful means to settle their differences and that Taiwan must be included in peaceful, multilateral talks to resolve disputes. And the third is that all parties must agree to free navigation in the region.
The Presidential Office said that Taiwan has long hoped to “shelve disputes and jointly develop” the region as a means for promoting regional peace and stability.
