Foreign Minister David Lee will head to Central America at the end of August. At a press conference Thursday, Miguel Tsao, the foreign ministry’s chief of Latin American affairs, laid out the goals of the minister’s trip.
Tsao said Lee will host an annual meeting of Taiwanese diplomats stationed throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. The meeting is intended to give him a better understanding of developments in Taiwan’s relationships with its twelve diplomatic allies in the region.
The foreign ministry has not yet reached a decision on where to hold the meeting. Tsao said that China has not voiced any objections to Taiwan’s decision to hold this year’s meeting in Central America.
The foreign minister will also visit some of Taiwan’s allies in the region, though the foreign ministry says his itinerary is also in the planning stages.
Tsao told reporters that Taiwan’s ties with its allies in Latin America remain stable, and that the foreign ministry has no reason to be concerned about their future.
