KMT lawmakers want 'state of Taiwan' speech

Opposition Kuomintang (KMT) lawmakers have called for President Tsai Ing-wen to give a report to the Legislature on the state of Taiwan.

KMT legislative caucus members are unhappy about the breakdown in cross-strait communications that began when Tsai took office on May 20. They are also upset about the way the national security apparatus dealt with the Navy’s accidental firing of a missile on July 1. KMT lawmakers say the incident raised tensions in the Taiwan Strait, but that the response from those in charge of national security was less than urgent.

They also say that the Hague Tribunal’s ruling on the South China Sea this week has seriously damaged Taiwan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

There is no precedent for the Legislature asking the president to deliver a report on recent events.

In response, Legislature President Su Jia-chyuan said there is room to discuss the idea of asking Tsai to report to the Legislature. Meanwhile, the Presidential Office says that Tsai will respect the Legislature’s decision if it decides to take up the KMT lawmakers’ call.
