Industry experts develop mobile apps to enhance security

Taiwan’s top-tier technology research firm Industrial Economics and Knowledge (IEK) has developed mobile apps that can enhance the functions of existing apps, including improved security.

Professor Chiueh Tzi-cker, chief researcher at the IEK, released the firm’s latest applications at an annual tech forum. He said many government officials use the Japanese messaging service Line, one of the most popular communication apps in Taiwan, to contact each other. However, they have no control over its potential security leaks. He said developers at the IEK have developed an application that is able to encrypt the app and secure it from hackers.

“Let’s say someone is using Line, [we are able to] add a layer of encryption around the application and we don’t have to work with its developer to do it," said Chiueh.

"This technology can add extra security to Line and [China’s popular chatting app] Wechat. And because we are the ones adding that security, Line’s developers cannot decode the encryption.”

Chiueh said, however, that the app is currently in development within the IEK and will not be released before they can find a publisher.
