President Tsai Ing-wen has said she stands with the people of France after the attack in the city of Nice that has killed at least 84 people, including many children.
An as-yet unidentified armed man drove through a crowd of people in a truck on Thursday evening as they were celebrating Bastille Day, France’s national day. The driver was shot dead by police.
After the latest in a string of terror attacks to hit France, the president wrote on her personal Facebook page to describe her shock and sadness. She also expressed her condolences to the families of the victims.
Eighty-four people have been confirmed killed at the present time, though the figure is expected to rise. A further 18 people are in a serious condition in hospital.
The Foreign Ministry said Friday it has instructed the Taiwanese representative office in France to follow up the status of Taiwanese nationals, students and tourists in the country. The ministry said three Taiwanese nationals were at the scene of the attack but were unhurt. Two Taiwanese tour groups in the Nice area on Thursday evening have been safely accounted for.
