Premier Lin Chuan has praised police for cracking the case of an international computer hacking ring. Lin was speaking at the National Police Agency Monday.
16 foreign nationals from six countries are known to have been involved in the hacking ring. Police say that the ring hacked into First Bank’s computer program and stole more than NT$83 million (US$2.6 million) from dozens of ATM's over the course of a three day spree. Police have been able to retrieve more than NT$60 million (US$1.89 million) of the stolen money. 13 of the suspects have already left Taiwan. The remaining three, including the main suspect, have been arrested.
Lin said he felt happy and excited upon hearing the news.
"Because it is an international fraud ring, it has drawn attention from many countries. The story was also covered by several media outlets. I also noticed that the process of cracking the case has set a good international example. Today I come here to praise everyone and to encourage you all," said Lin.
