Talk of Vatican breakthrough with China downplayed

Taiwan’s diplomatic relations with the Vatican remain good and Taiwan is always kept informed of the Holy See’s dealings with China. That’s according to a foreign ministry spokesperson on Tuesday.

Eleanor Wang was speaking in response to a recent Reuters report that Beijing and the Vatican may be on the verge of a diplomatic breakthrough. The Vatican maintains ties with Taipei rather than Beijing. This is largely on account of Beijing’s refusal to permit the Holy See to appoint Catholic bishops in China.

Wang said the government will continue to monitor the situation but is not concerned about a possible severing of ties. She said the Vatican and Beijing have had contact many times over the course of decades and Taipei has always been kept abreast of developments.

Wang said, "In the future we will continue to work hard to strengthen our ties with the Vatican and be their partner in peace, humanity and charity. [Our partnership] in this regard has already won international recognition. As for China’s dealings with the Vatican, we will continue to pay attention to it."
