Government to retire nuclear plants as scheduled: Cabinet
Government to retire nuclear plants as scheduled: Cabinet

The Cabinet says that it will retire Taiwan’s nuclear power plants as scheduled. At the same time, the Cabinet also plans to implement energy saving policies and developing alternative energy sources.

A white paper released by an industrial group Tuesday suggests pushing back the retirement schedule for nuclear plants. The white paper says that delaying the retirement of nuclear power plants will allow time for the development of renewable energy sources and help Taiwan avoid power shortages.

However, the Democratic Progressive Party has made it a goal to scrap Taiwan’s nuclear power plants by 2025. On Wednesday, Cabinet spokesman Tung Chen-yuan said that the government will retire the plants as scheduled.

“The government will ensure the safety of the nuclear power plants and a stable power supply. We will do everything we can to implement policies on saving energy, and to ensure that the development of new power plans stays on schedule. We will strengthen the system managing the supply and demand of energy, and develop new types of energy. These are our current priorities.”

Once again, that was Cabinet spokesman Tung Chen-yuan speaking on Wednesday.
