The Turkish representative to Taiwan, Ismet Erikan, has said his country is safe to visit following last week’s failed coup.
Erikan held a press conference in Taipei on Friday on the link between terrorism and last week’s attempted takeover by the military as well as the latest steps taken by his government.
On Wednesday, Turkey imposed a three-month state of emergency in the aftermath of the bloody coup attempt, in which 265 people died.
Erikan sought to ease concerns over travel to his country.
"Turkey is as safe as any other country in the West, no more and no less. Istanbul is as safe as Paris. Istanbul is as safe as London," said Erikan.
Erikan said he hopes Taiwan’s foreign ministry will lower its travel alert for Turkey again. The foreign ministry lowered its travel alert from red to orange Wednesday. Orange signals travelers should exercise a high degree of caution and non-essential trips should be avoided.
