Mainland Affairs Council Minister Chang Hsiao-yueh says she hopes for a stop to tragedies involving Chinese tourists in Taiwan.
Chang is Taiwan’s top official in charge of cross-strait affairs. She was speaking Saturday at a funeral parlor in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan. Chang paid her respects to 26 people killed in a bus fire earlier in the week. 24 of the victims were tourists on their way back to China.
Chang gave her condolences to the victims’ relatives, and said she hopes that tourism across Taiwan Strait can promote peace between the two sides. She said that since it began, cross-strait tourism has promoted mutual understanding. Chang said that the government and bus operators are investigating the cause of the tragedy, and that she hopes that Chinese tourists in Taiwan can have safe journeys in the future.
