KMT calls on Tsai to propose alternative to 1992 Consensus

The opposition KMT has called on President Tsai Ing-wen to propose an alternative to the 1992 Consensus.

Under the 1992 Consensus Taipei and Beijing agree that both sides belong to one China, with each side maintaining its own interpretation of what “one China” means. Tsai has resisted pressure to accept the consensus, and since her inauguration, Beijing has cut off communications with Taipei.

On Saturday, the KMT said that if Tsai will not accept the consensus, she should offer a pragmatic alternative. The party said that it opposes any actions that could damage the feelings of people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait or endanger their lives and property. The KMT also said that leaders in Taipei and Beijing should take future development and the interests of the people on both sides as their priorities.
