The timetable for setting up a mechanism for dialogue between Taiwan and Japan on maritime issues has been pushed back.
After a dispute between Taiwan and Japan over fishing rights off Okinotori reef in May, the Cabinet announced that the two sides had agreed to set up a mechanism for dialogue at the end of July.
Foreign Minister David Lee did not respond to questions about whether there is any truth to talk of a delay. But Lee said that the establishment of the dialogue mechanism involves many different government agencies, and that the government needs more time to consider details of the mechanism.
Lee said that there will be a formal explanation of progress Tuesday from the Association of East Asian Relations, the semi-official body in charge of Taiwan-Japan exchanges.
