President Tsai Ing-wen is set to formally apologize to Taiwan’s aborigines for past wrongs in a ceremony on August 1.
The Presidential Office revealed details of the ceremony on Thursday. The ceremony is scheduled to begin on the morning of August 1 with a ritual in which aboriginal representatives will announce their arrival to their ancestors. Tsai will then meet the aboriginal representatives at the front of the Presidential Office.
After a prayer offered by aboriginal religious leaders, Tsai will read out the apology. A National Security Bureau official said Thursday that the apology will not be just an event, but a movement to make amends and move towards a more harmonious future.
Taiwan is home to 16 officially recognized aboriginal groups.
