Tropical depression off Philippines may approach Taiwan: CWB

The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) says that a tropical depression to the east of the Philippines may become a typhoon before Sunday.

The storm is currently 1200 km from Taiwan’s southernmost tip. The bureau says that the storm may approach Taiwan, reaching its closest point on Monday. The bureau has not ruled out the possibility of issuing a sea warning for the storm on Sunday night.

On Saturday, bureau forecaster Lin Ding-yi said that the track the storm takes on Sunday will determine whether it will affect weather in Taiwan. If the storm moves west-northwest, Lin said, it will have a limited impact on Taiwan’s weather. However, Lin said that if the storm moves to the northwest, there is a chance it could make landfall on Taiwan.
