Mexico has decided to levy a tariff on Taiwanese steel imports following an anti-dumping investigation. Imports of galvanized steel products from Taiwan have been slapped with a tariff of US$0.56 per kilo, which could hurt the nation’s steel producers.
Hsu Da-wei, spokesperson for the Economics Ministry, said the impact may be greatest on China Steel Corporation. China Steel exports up to 100,000 tonnes of steel to Mexico each year for auto manufacturing.
China Steel is consulting with legal experts concerning the tariff and has not sought assistance from the government. Hsu said the government is prepared to give assistance in terms of subsidies and legal support if required.
