The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) says that Taiwan’s public universities do not exclude students from Mainland China. The MAC’s statement on Wednesday comes in response to criticism of alleged unfair recruitment practices that keep Chinese students out of public universities.
Professor Way Kuo, a member of Taiwan’s top research body said Tuesday that Taiwan limits Mainland students’ enrollment to private universities. But MAC has responded that Taiwan’s public universities opened their post-graduate and doctoral programs to Mainland Students in 2011, with undergraduate programs following suit in 2014.
The recruitment office in charge of Chinese students has also released numbers showing that public universities have recruited over 2,200 Mainland students for the 2016 academic year. The MAC says that recruiting Chinese students will give Taiwan’s universities a competitive edge and help promote cross-strait exchanges.
