Tsai meets with aboriginal protestors amid criticism of apology
Listening

President Tsai Ing-wen has met with a group of aboriginal protestors to address criticism of her recent apology to Taiwan’s aborigines.

Tsai met with aboriginal representatives on Monday to apologize for historical wrongs and for the discrimination and inequality Taiwan’s indigenous people continue to face today.

But the apology has come under fire for the way it was conducted. Among the points that have come under fire is the way that elderly representatives from indigenous groups were left to stand waiting in front of the Presidential Office before Tsai came out to greet them. Daytime temperatures in Taipei this week have been in the 30’s.

On Wednesday afternoon, Tsai met with protestors near the Presidential Office to hear their criticisms of her apology and her plan to set up a committee on transitional justice for indigenous people. Tsai also explained her plans to implement transitional justice. Tsai also accepted a banner reading “historical justice” from the protestors that she displayed in the Presidential Office.
