Vice President Chen Chien-jen will visit the Dominican Republic to attend the swearing-in of Danilo Medina for his second term as president.
Medina has been president of the Caribbean nation since 2012. He won re-election in May and his second term will start on August 16th.
Deputy Foreign Minister Javier Hou said Friday that President Tsai Ing-wen had appointed Chen to attend the ceremony on her behalf. Hou said Chen’s trip underlines the government’s “pragmatic and mutually beneficial diplomacy.”
During his visit, Chen will visit a 911 call center, a center for children with special needs, a solar power plant as well as an orchid farm. All four facilities are projects in which Taiwan has been involved.
The vice president and his delegation will leave for the Dominican Republic on August 13. They will return to Taiwan on August 20.
