MAC calls for return of five Taiwanese nationals held in Kenya

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) has contacted its Mainland counterpart to call for the return of five Taiwanese nationals held in Kenya.

On Friday, a Kenyan court found all five suspects not guilty and ordered that they be returned to Taiwan. But Kenyan police have ignored the court’s ruling and are reportedly planning to send the suspects to China.

The five were among a group of 28 Taiwanese nationals arrested in Kenya in 2014. They were suspected of telecom fraud. The other 23 suspects were acquitted earlier in the year, but in April, Kenyan police forced them to board a plane bound for China.

On Saturday, the MAC announced that it has contacted its counterparts in Beijing about the case. The MAC has urged Beijing not to detain Taiwanese nationals arrested abroad because Taiwan and Mainland China have not established principles for handling international fraud cases.
