Taiwan’s Olympic athletes are preparing to take part in their first day of competitions in Rio.
Taiwan’s male archery team will face off against Indonesia in the men’s team elimination event on Saturday. The female archery team will then compete in the women’s quarterfinals Sunday. Archery has been an important medal winner for Taiwan in the past, with the men’s team winning a silver medal and the women’s team bringing home a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Taiwanese judoka Tsai Ming-yen, rower Huang Yi-ting, gymnast Lee Chih-kai, and weightlifter Chen Wei-ling will also compete in events on Saturday.
Taiwan has sent 58 athletes to this year’s games. They will compete in 18 different sports. Due to the sensitive issue of Taiwan’s political status, Taiwanese athletes compete at the Olympics under the name Chinese Taipei, and use a specially-designed Olympic flag.
