In Rio, Kuo Hsin-chun won bronze in the women’s weightlifting 58 kg group on Monday. That takes Taiwan’s medal haul for the Games to three, with fellow weightlifter Hsu Shu-ching claiming Taiwan’s first gold in the women’s 53kg event on Sunday.
Kuo lifted a total of 231 kg, with 102 kg in the snatch and 129 kg in the clean and jerk. Despite the third place, Kuo said she was unsatisfied with her performance as she was nervous and failed to pay attention to some details. Thailand’s Sukayanya Srisurat won the gold after with 240 kg. Silver went to Pimsiri Sirikaew, also of Thailand, who lifted a total of 232 kg.
President Tsai Ing-wen congratulated Kuo on Tuesday on her Facebook page.
On Sunday, Hsu Shu-ching won Taiwan’s first gold of the Games after Chinese weightlifter Li Yajun was disqualified for failing to complete the clean and jerk portion of the event.
Taiwan’s women’s archery team has also won a bronze medal.
