CDC: Discrimination against HIV+ student caught UNAIDS attention

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says the case of a National Defense University student who was expelled after testing positive for HIV has caught the attention of the joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

The CDC said Tuesday it had received a letter from UNAIDS last month expressing its concerns. UNAIDS reiterated the “International Guidelines on HIV/AIDS and Human Rights” and included rulings handed down by courts in the United States, India, Kenya and Sri Lanka on the rights of students with HIV/AIDS.

The CDC accused the military of discrimination against the student and demanded “improvement.” However, it lost an appeal filed by the military because the court ruled that CDC is not the supervisory body of the university.

The CDC has already filed an appeal with the Supreme Administrative Court. A CDC official said it does not want Taiwan to be seen as a country that discriminates against people with HIV/AIDS.
