Premier Lin Chuan has called on government agencies to provide more support to Taiwan’s athletes and their coaching staff.
His remarks come after leading professional tennis player Hsieh Su-wei pulled out of the Rio Olympics because she was not allowed to bring her coach with her. Hsieh’s move prompted widespread criticism of the government’s lack of support for the sportspersons who represent the country.
Premier Lin said Thursday that the education ministry and the National Sports Training Center need to work to meet the needs of Taiwan’s athletes and coaches. Lin has also called for more investment in coaching, medical care for the country’s athletes, as well as offering assistance after they end their professional careers.
