The director of the 2017 Summer Universiade, Marc Vandenplus, has said he is happy with Taipei’s preparations to host the games.
The city plans to start a countdown clock on August 20, exactly one year before the student Olympics are scheduled to open.
Speaking Thursday, Vandenplas said he has been impressed by the sincerity of the team tasked with making the arrangements for the games. He said the International University Sports Foundation (FISU) is confident about the preparations Taipei is making.
The city’s hosting of the student games has had to overcome a number of delays and obstacles. Chief among these was the decision by Taipei mayor Ko Wen-je to halt construction on the Taipei Dome over safety concerns. The arena was intended to serve as the main venue for the games.
