A tropical storm formed over the western Pacific Ocean early on Sunday, but Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau (CWB) says it has little chance of hitting Taiwan.

Tropical storm Chanthu, which formed at 2am near Guam, is the seventh storm this season in the Pacific.

The weather bureau says Chanthu is moving in a north-northeasterly direction toward Japan's Kanto region, which includes the Greater Tokyo area.

The bureau says it will continue to observe the storm's movement over the next few days.
