Government mishandled toll clerks severance pay issue: Lin

Premier Lin Chuan says the government and the employer of toll collection workers need to be more responsible in the handling of these employees’ severance pay.

The government has come under fire for favoring the Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection company over recalculating the severance pay of its laid-off staff. The former employees have been gradually laid off as the government implements an automated system.

Lin said Friday that both the company and the government need to share the responsibility for not drafting the workers’ contracts properly.

“The toll clerks’ recent protest concerned their inadequate severance pay. There are lots of flaws in their contract with Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection, which resulted in the company not bearing enough legal responsibility [in the handling of their employees’ severance pay]," said Lin.

"Therefore, we hope that they can bear a greater share of the burden. The government will also need to undertake its fair share as well.”
