Seventeen Taiwanese nationals have been detained in the Philippines for alleged drug trafficking and telecom fraud. That’s the word from Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Eleanor Wang on Tuesday.

Wang said the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines has already verified their identities.

"Police are still collecting evidence and conducting an investigation on Boracay Island. The 17 Taiwanese nationals are cooperating with the [authorities] for due process," said Wang.

"We have already expressed concerns to Manila and we have asked them to provide us with the latest developments and to ensure the legal rights of our citizens.”

Wang said the foreign ministry will keep in contact with the Filipino police about the case.
