The foreign ministry says it will donate US$500,000 to APEC.

The ministry says the donation will help APEC with its regional security and trade efforts. The APEC secretariat has published a press release to thank Taiwan for its support.

APEC is a forum that promotes free trade among its 21 member economies, all of them located along the Pacific Rim. Taiwan participates under the name “Chinese Taipei” due to the sensitivity surrounding its political status.

The donation will go to two APEC sub-funds: Human Security, devoted to emergency preparedness, counter-terrorism and health, and Supply Chain Connectivity, which helps developing economies enhance supply chain performance. Taiwanese officials hold senior positions in both sub-funds.

The foreign ministry says that since Taiwan joined APEC in 1991, it has always supported APEC’s efforts, especially in the areas of food safety, energy technology, emergency rescue, and women’s rights. The ministry says that Taiwan will continue to contribute to the forum by sharing its own experience and by furthering its collaboration with other member economies.
